How to Fix It When Search is Not Working on Windows PC


The Windows search function is a feature in the Windows operating system that allows users to quickly find and access files, folders, and other content stored on their computer or connected storage devices. First, make sure that the search service is running. To do this, open the Services app by searching for it in the Start menu or by pressing the Windows key + R and typing “services.msc” into the Run dialogue box.

2. Rebuild the Search Index

To rebuild the index, open the Indexing Options app by searching for it in the Start menu or by pressing the Windows key + R and typing “control.exe /name Microsoft.IndexingOptions” into the Run dialogue box.

3. Reset Windows Search

If the above steps do not work, you can try to reset the Windows search feature using Windows PowerShell. Open Windows PowerShell as an administrator, by left-clicking on the Start button and selecting the Windows PowerShell option. Then right-click Windows PowerShell and select “Run as Administrator”.


Once the PowerShell window is open, type the following command and press enter:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

This command will reset the Windows search feature, and it should start working again.
