Does your Windows 11 device feel too bright most of the time, regardless of the brightness settings? There might be an easy fix for you. Most devices now allow you to choose a default display mode: either light mode or dark mode. The default light mode uses dark text on the light (usually white) background. Come to the dark side and you’ll see white text on black background. Windows users have the option to change the mode in settings. Like Windows 10, Windows 11 comes with two primary options for its menus, settings, and other primary interface elements: dark or light. While it’s easy to change from one to the other, it isn’t immediately apparent how to access that option. Here’s how you do it.

How to enable dark theme in Windows 11

Step 1: Click the Start tile and go to Settings > Personalization (or just right-click your desktop background and choose Personalize).

Step 2: Alternatively, click Themes, then select a Dark Mode theme from the selection here.

Step 3: Customising Dark Mode Themes: Windows will take a second or two to adjust itself, and then roll out the new desktop background, colour and sound schemes. You can personalise your new theme by clicking Use a custom theme and changing the BackgroundColourSounds and Mouse cursor using the buttons above.

Step 4: You can also switch to Dark Mode from within any theme, including Light Mode themes. Return to Start > Settings > Personalisation but this time click Colours.

Step 5: Switch Mode by clicking the drop-down menu next to Choose your mode and select Dark.

Note that not every app supports automatic switching between light and dark modes with Windows. It should also be understood that all of these options are cosmetic — they won’t affect how your computer performs at all — and can be adjusted or undone at any time.
