Google will shut down its Hangouts service in November this year and is shifting users of the service to Google chat.

The company announced this on Monday, June 27, 2022, saying that it would start migrating consumer Hangouts users to Google Chat before the former is no longer available after November 2022.
However, the company stated that for users who use Hangouts in Gmail on the web, it won’t start prompting them to make the switch to Chat until July.
Also, Hangouts will remain usable on its desktop site until November, and it will warn users “at least one month” in advance before it starts pointing the Hangouts site to Chat.
Google has been gradually phasing out the Hangouts brand in favor of its newer messaging services for some time now, so it’s not surprising the company has finally decided to sunset the platform.
Compared to Hangouts, Google Chat has more features to keep the new users engaged. According to Google, “Chat also includes Spaces, a dedicated place for topic-based collaboration.
Groups and teams can share ideas, work on documents, and manage files and tasks, all from a single location. And, the new integrated view in Gmail makes it easier to use Chat alongside your Gmail inbox, Spaces, and Meet.”
Google plans on improving Chat as much as it can over time to ensure a good experience for its users.
