If you are using a computer system, you are working with lots of files that you wouldn’t want to lose in case of a sudden system malfunction, or perhaps, you saved up a version of your file which is not as accurate as a previous version.
If you have made a huge modification to the file, recollecting your previous edits can be a task, or impossible unless you have it saved up as you are working.
While document processors do offer regular backup of your files as you work on them, this is different if you have saved up the file yourself, or the system suddenly malfunctions before they are saved. In either case, you won’t have access to the previous versions of your files and this is where you can utilize the file history feature in Windows 10 and 11.

What is File History in Windows 10 and 11
This is a version control system that allows you to back up different versions of your files while you work on them. You can back them up locally to your computer, or an external hard drive.
Hence, whenever you need to revisit an older file version, either to restore it or you wish to refresh your memory of its formatting. You can easily retrieve it from the computer memory or storage device.

How to Setup File History in Windows 10 and 11
To get started, you need to plug your external drive into your computer system first if you are using one. Or else it won’t be discovered by Windows. Once you have the drive inserted, you should open the control panel by typing it into the search menu.
Next, you should locate “File History” from the control settings view. You can change your view by selecting View By>>Large Icon.
From the list of control panel items, you should locate “File History”.
Next, click on “Turn On” to start backing up your file history.
The files are backup to your computer under your username. And you can locate it from under the program file C://>Users>Username.
From the left side of the screen, you have several features that you can use to control how your file is being backed up.
To choose your external drive, select the “Select drive” option. To remove folders that you won’t need a backup for, select the “Exclude folder option”. The “Advanced settings” option allows you to decide how often you want your file backed up, and how long you want old copies of your files backed.
From advanced settings, you can also select the “Backup logs” option.
From here, you can have a detailed view of your backed-up files.
To restore your files, you can use the “Restore personal files” option from the backup menu.
