If you are a fan of rugged protective cases for your phone, you must often come across the term “MIL-SPEC” or “MIL-STD” on some protective phone cases.

Well, if you haven’t been noticing it before, you should check that rugged protective case on your phone or consider purchasing one, you will notice that most rugged phone case is marked MIL-SPEC.

What is MIL-SPEC Drop Protection?

MIL-SPEC Drop protection is Documentation, detailing the specifications for how protective gears should be manufactured to be highly resistant against natural phenomenal that aids wear and tears.

If you see any phone casing with the MIL-SPEC symbol, it indicates that the manufacturers have manufactured the case by following the MIL-STD-810G Standard, this is the latest standard as updated in 2012.

Older standards of the documents are the MIL-STD-810F Standard, any protective gear with this sign is an indication that it was manufactured with a standard older than the latest standard.

Although the MIL-SPEC stands for Military Spec, does this mean that the phone case has undergone some special military testing to confirm it ruggedly? The answer is No!

MIL-SPEC had nothing to do with any military experiment, it is simply a standard for quality protective gear manufacturing by following a specialized testing procedure to ensure durability.

Protective gears and phones marked “MIL-SPEC” mean that they have been tested during manufacturing to meet up with the MIL-STD-810G standard.

But, can we believe the reports that every phone marked MIL-SPEC is sure to be durable?

We can’t advise so, since there is no organizational body to confirm that a manufacturer has followed this procedure, a manufacturer can simply include the specification, with the hope that the product is up to the MIL-STD-810G Standard.

We will rather advise that you should always check the available information provided by a manufacturer who claims to follow the MIL-STD-810G procedure, some manufactures usually include information on how their product is tested for durability.

The MIL-SPEC procedure

According to section 516.6 of procedure IV of the MIL-STD-810G standard documentation, manufacturers should follow the following procedure in testing the durability of their product:

– The test should be performed by dropping the product on a hard surface, 26 times on each face, edges, and corners

– The hard surface used should consist of two-inch thick plywood over a hard surface.

If a manufacturer indicated that they do follow a similar procedure, then they have probably followed the MIL-STD-810G Standard documentation, but remember that there are no governing bodies to ensure that these procedures are truly followed.
